Hello
I am trying to contact Colleen McCulough/Sir Arthur Roden Cutler. I know Colleen McCullough recently wrote a book about Sir Arthur Cuttler and that they are close friends. I have information regarding people Sir Arthur and his wife helped whilst in Sri Lenka in the 1950's which I am sure they will want to hear.
Can anybody help?
Thanks

Hi again, I do not visit the Norfolk web sit on a regular basis, however when I do
one often finds another nail being driven into the coffin, Technology is an amazing
achievement in the 20th century particularly for places as isolated as Norfolk but every thing comes with a price and having just looked at the Island real-estate that price is extremely high.
I had to rub my unbelieving eyes several times when $500,000 (half a Million Dollars) appeared for Properties and businesses.
Simple economics (i.e. the average salary on Norfolk) tells me that there is a large imbalance in the economy or there is the Very Very Rich and the Very Very poor. How on earth could the average couple pay off a mortgage when they simply do not have the income to match the obvious inflation which is present on the Island.
Technology has put Norfolk into every living room in every house in the world, this then allows access to those whom want a piece of Norfolk and it would appear they are willing to pay for it.
The irony of it all is on the opening page of the Island Real-estate it says “THIS COULD BE YOU”
With a young couple strolling down emily Bay (they must have won loto) when in reality I think it should say “THIS USE TO BE YOU” because now it could bloody well be anybody.

Sorry..in the first in the note I just penned I put a capital "A" in my address by mistake ..it should have been lower case of course.

She has shared her thoughts with me regarding a long nurtured idea of escaping with (her husband and daughter) from suburbia for a period of time "getting away from it all" and sharing the pleasures of Norfolk and givinh her daughter a time of growing up away from he big city atmosphere.
I was of the belief that you have to be either living or related in someway to present/past persons/ancestors etc ?
Can anyone please advise if it's possible to "reside' on Norfolk for a week, month or year (or more).. and who she would need to approach to make such an application.

Submission:
In 1987 the Commonwealth Grants Commission sounded a warning when it concluded that the Island's waste disposal service was below standard but the matter has yet to become a major issue.
In 1993 a consultant firm, Unimelb, was commissioned by the Commonwealth department of Environment, Sport and Territories and the Norfolk Island Government to report on an agreed waste management strategy for the Island. Its report Waste Minimization Strategies Norfolk Island was published in 1994.
Unimelb established that the people of Norfolk Island produce 335 kilograms of waste per person. This was 37% higher than the equivalent statistic for Victoria.
The strategy proposed by Unimelb does not appear to have yet been comprehensively considered by the Norfolk Island Government. In 1999 the Government established a Waste Management Committee.
The adequacy of Norfolk Island Waste Management Service was one of the matters considered by the Commonwealth grants Commission in 1997. The Commission found that the Norfolk Island Government had their financial capacity to provide at mainland standards all of the services for which it is responsible but found that some current services, including waste disposal were below standard. "Waste disposal" it stated, "is very much below the standard expected by the rest of Australia and the international community
The elimination of adverse environmental effects from the below standard waste management system is obviously of both direct and indirect benefit to the community since it will improve the quality of life for residents and visitors and benefit the economy by enhancing Norfolk's image as a green destination.

I think it is more than a little unfair to expect one person to recognise a problem, make the problem known to the general population, solve the problem and put the solution into
practice. The future of our waste, on Norfolk, is a problem we should all be thinking about. A team effort with consultation is
required. The solution is going to involve us all, let's all be involved in the formation of this
solution. 'Friend of Denise' - do you have any constructive thoughts on the matter?
Personally I am in favour of a scheme to reduce the potential rubbish that enters our island. Does anybody have any ideas on how this could be done? Would love to hear some

It is so easy to pretend that the increase of tourism and per head capita is not effecting us when we do not have the inclination to know how and when we will be dealing with this major health risk
We can choose to bury our heads in the sand and not bite the bullet on this backyard operation. I can assure you that, to watch even one truckload of this TOXIC waste filter over our land, pollute our fish &sea and blow TOXIC clouds of ash across 'Your island' will very soon become
a major concern for the ' islands' health & wellbeing. . .'

Subject: Linking Pacific islands
Submission:
Hi there everyone from one Pacific Islander to another visiting Norfolk Is. The Pacific community is a unique one, very diverse, yet with many commonalities. All the islands are very beautiful, most are small with close relations with the sea, and all have very fragile eco-systems, easily damaged. The people are stongminded, proud, love their unique cultures and traditions, are very hospitable, and deeply aware of their place in the world and their spiritual relationship with the one supreme being of all people. They have many common problems, like the limited nature of their economies, the problems of distance with other island communities, the clash with the pressures of development and consumerism, the breakdown of traditions and families, and other difficulties causing much division and disharmony. Like many small places in the world, there are serious challenges to the meaningful survival of these communities and their quality of life into the future. Yet it seems impossible in the rapidly emerging global community to go back to the old ways. What is the answer?
The Pacific communities could have a great future, one capable of setting an example to the rest of the world, but only if their peoples have the vision and determination to tackle these challenges in a united and constructive way, both within their own communities and in consultation with others. The increasing links between Pacific communities is a major step in this direction, but it needs a lot more. It needs adherence to the right principles appropriate for this modern day, while at the same time preserving the best of the past. But if some past beliefs, concepts and practices are no longer appropriate for today, they may have to be discarded, or at least modified. The solutions cannot be arrived at by simply adhering to materialistic or self-interested values, nor can they be based on intolerance, prejudices and hatreds. A wider, all-embracing vision is required.
It is to be hoped that the leaders and peoples of Pacific Island communities will embrace this challenge with enthusiasm and will enter into constructive dialogue in an attempt to identify and put into practice appropriate principles and solutions. If they dont, then the future for such fragile island communities, in a world dominated by remote concentrations of enormous power, rapidly spreading to all corners of the globe and unconcerned about the fate of small island communities, could be very dark. This would be very regretable. But it is a realistic possibility that the island leaders and people must face. God grant that it doesnt happen.

There is a mention of ongoing negotiations with the Norfolk Island Administration, but it does not indicate whether this is because Norfolk Island does not want genetically modified organisms released there, or whether it is because NI does'nt want any restrictions on GMOs which this bill would do, albeit to a rather limited extent.

What an insult to my/our beautiful Island having accommodation named

and I would be delighted to know our visitors think.
If a number of our dear departed could see the way Norfolk has ended up,...
accommodation by the mile, round-a-bout et cetera et cetera, they would just say:-
"wal see wae uwwus ilen se come,....but wi larn dae d' wae gwen end up".
I just hope for the accommodation owners sake, we get the tourist numbers to

Subject: Information about work in Norfolk
Submission:
Hello,
My family have always had a great admiration for the way of life maintained at
Norfolk Island, and the independence and self reliance of its people. We are hoping
to spend 2001 on your island.
We briefly spoke to another Kiwi, who's name I have lost, who worked there for a year.
We would greatly appreciate any information on work, work visa's, and the living
and accomodation costs.
Many thanks in advance.
(and remain independent!)

Hi, I am currently living in Sydney, and I'm VERY interested to know what is the deal with this referendum in early April(about the time of this email, I think)? I received some info on it through the mail (still not sure how yorlye got my address!), but it was very brief, and I still don't really know. If someone could drop me a line, anyone, preferably a nuetral thinker, that would be fab.
I REALLY miss Norfolk a lot, and will always consider it home. Therefore I am taking an interest in the running of the place.
Hello to everyone there, especially the Year Twelve class of '97. Take it easy, guys!

Dear reader,
I am a 22-year-old Internet user who lives in London and would like to correpond with any young Norfolk islanders. I love politics, broadcasting, the media and clubbing I'm seeing Geri Haliwell this Saturday and saw Tina Arena and Bananarama last week. I tried to stand for parliament last October in the London constituency of Kensington and Chelsea. I closely follow Australian current affairs and popular culture being a fan of Neighbours and Prisoner Cell Block H.
I visited Sydney four years ago and hope to return this September and December. When I was sixteen I was a London correpondent for Sydney's Radio 2UE and 2GB and at 20 for Melbourne's 3UZ. I love pop music including Aerosmith, Vengaboys, Cold Chisel, Top Loader, Yothu Yindi, Kylie and a British pianist called Bobby Crush. If you are a young Norfolk islander or live in the Pacific area, please contact me at brougham@flauntit.net or check out my basic website www.flauntit.net. From a cold London to my Pacific cousins bye.

Subject: Do we have a problem?
Submission:
The Federal Government has created a National Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse to provide expert advice on how to protect children against paedophilia.
The move follows the release of the Wood Royal Commission's findings.
Family Services Minister Judi Moylan says the community-based council will advise the Government on how to fight child abuse, how to encourage positive parenting and how to create healthy, functioning families.
The Council's first job will be to look at the Royal Commission recommendations, including the establishment of a Children's Commission.
The Council will be headed by Professor Kim Oates, the Professor of Paediatrics and Child Heath at the University of Sydney, and chair of the Division of Medicine at the Westmead Children's Hospital.
Professor Oates is hoping the body will become permanent.

Subject: think of the future not the past - save others
Submission:
There was once a young girl who was so scared to tell of something that happened that she hid it for years - too scared to claim a wrong doing in a small community.
Eventually others were also hidding the same truth for fear of telling of the same wrong doing.
Trouble is - each child that does not tell is holding the door open for more children to be hurt by the same person.
Please be brave and tell the police and maybe stop what is going on for the future of our children.

Submission:
I am trying to locate Mary Christian, once of Norfolk Island and a friend of long ago. During the 1950s, 60s & 70s Mary lived in Newcastle NSW with her parents and brother Rob. They had a general store near the wharves and lived above the shop. The family was very active in the Christian Science church in Newcastle. When I knew them from time to time they would visit Norfolk Island or have friends come over from Norfolk and stay with them. I lost touch in the late 1960s after I joined the Royal Australian Navy and would love to say hello if anyone can help. I guess Mary would now be early / mid 50.

Subject: Up and Coming Election
Submission:
Dear Norfolk Island Electors,
This is a plea and a warning. Be very careful who YOU vote for in the next election.
It is very clear (from the last meeting) that a great deal of "point scoring" was being
carried out. It happens EVERY time there is a new election around the corner.
If you/we want Norfolk to go down the gurgler, then vote without thinking. BUT,..if we want the best for
Norfolk Island and the young generation, then please vote with your heart.
Before it is too late LET US STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS. We don't don't to be treated like
dirt or second rate citizens when Norfolk ess uwwus hoem.
REMEMBER,.........VOTE FROM THE HEART.
Do we need the chamber of commerce to run Norfolk and our affairs???
Do we need people with pecuniary interests to run Norfolk the way THEY want it?
We need people who are GENUINE in what they feel about the Island and the people.
They are far too many people who worry about themselves only.
